Welcome Party/Bariaat

Kick off the festivities with us at Brittland Manor, beginning at 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Enjoy an evening of mingling, music, and Indian food. Guests are encouraged to wear Indian attire and/or colorful clothing.

This welcome Party, or Bariaat, as Guyanese call it, is a joyous and festive pre-wedding procession and celebration where the groom is escorted to the wedding venue. The ceremony is full of music, dancing, and bright colors, showcasing the groom’s arrival in a royal style and his joy and excitement about getting married. The baariat is set to the beat of traditional Indian instruments like the tassa of the Caribbean and a mix of conventional and modern Bollywood songs. The groom wears Indian finery and traditionally arrives on a horse. Now, he may walk, arrive in a car, an elephant, or any other way as his party leads him to the ceremony location. The bride’s family welcomes the groom as the bariaat approaches the wedding venue. The party is greeted with a special ceremony followed by a garland or jai mala exchange. The jai mala symbolizes the partners welcoming each other into their families and joining two families into one.
